Retest & Recycle
If the goal of education is for students to learn — rather than to compete against one another — then tests exist to verify training, and a failed test is a reason to train again, not a verdict.
Where It Comes From
The Army's Theory of Learning
At Cadet Summer Training, cadets who fail the land navigation test are pulled aside, retrained, and allowed to retest. Our founder passed the first time — and was angry that others got a second chance. On reflection, that anger was the product of a school system that emphasizes competition over learning: retests feel unfair only when education is a race for class rank.
The Army allows retests because the ultimate goal is not to test the soldier, but to train the soldier. The test merely verifies the training. The Army does not care whether an infantryman could throw a grenade the proper distance the first time he was taught; it cares that he can do it now, when called upon in battle.
Are infinite retests allowed? No. After the maximum attempts comes the recycle: the soldier is moved to a later training class and starts the block over. The time lost is a sunk cost; the standard never moves. True North Academy applies both halves of that discipline to schooling.
Execution
How the Recycle Model Works

Units, not years
Every subject is broken into units of a few weeks. Students take fewer classes at a time than a conventional school — with bye weeks — but complete more classes per year at greater speed and depth.

Test to verify
A unit ends with an honest exam — instruments matched to the knowledge states the unit targets, never announced multiple-choice masquerading as mastery.

Retest with fresh questions
Fail, and you retest — new questions, same topic, limited attempts. A retest is training verification, not a scarlet letter.

Recycle, never socially promote
Exhaust the retests and the unit recycles: relearn the material — often with a different approach — and pass it properly. A recycle costs weeks, not a year, which resolves the grade-retention controversy outright.
The Standard
Nothing below an A — 95% — passes a unit.
A “C” means the student did not know 30% of the material. Would you accept a physician who missed 30% of what is essential to the job — or the architect who designed your home? Mastering the basics to the 95% standard is precisely what makes speed, depth, and application possible later: nothing has to be retaught, so instruction accelerates.
Why It Works
The Four Aspects of Academic Rigor
In the conventional model these four aspects are at odds: speed decelerates so the lowest common denominator can meet the standard, depth is sacrificed to cover material at that pace, and application can never surpass the depth of instruction. The recycle model renders them mutually complementary — if a student doesn't understand yet, that's fine; he will relearn it, perhaps from a teacher whose approach fits him better, while the class moves at full speed.
Speed
How quickly the material is covered.
Depth
The level of complexity and detail.
Application
The thought and effort required to apply the new knowledge — the difference between a multiple-choice test of rote events and an essay requiring historical analysis.
Standard
The minimum accepted score or performance.
Less homework, not more.Conventional students carry seven to nine simultaneous classes — more than a university course load — and “only an hour” of homework per class is a midnight finish. Fewer simultaneous units mean homework drops in hours while rising in depth and application.
Matched to readiness. Brains develop at widely varying rates, yet conventional schools force-feed division of fractions to every fifth grader regardless. In the recycle model a student not yet ready for a topic recycles it or takes other units in the same subject first — no teacher hand-holding a developmentally unready child through material while the prepared children wait, bored, watching the same film they saw in fifth grade.
And the exceptional are unleashed.We have children who yearn for knowledge, and we waste twelve years of their undivided attention teaching to the lowest common denominator — then fire-hose them at university. In a recycle model, a quick student's speedy progression is not just permitted but expected.
Common Concerns
Asked and Answered
▸Won't students fall far behind their peers if they keep recycling?
Even a student who recycles often will not be behind in all subjects — the model lets children play to their strengths, running ahead in some subjects while consolidating others. And a student recycled until the basics are truly mastered accelerates in advanced coursework, because nothing downstream has to be retaught. Compare the alternative honestly: a diploma built on Cs certifies that a third of everything was never learned.
▸Isn't being recycled shameful?
Where recycling is rare it stigmatizes; where it is common it is simply how the school works. In Ranger School, where the recycle rate exceeds 70%, recycling carries no shame — the majority of Rangers are recycles. With a 95% standard, recycling is commonplace by design, expected, and free of stigma.
▸How will students be assessed for college admission without traditional grades?
By the academic level they have genuinely reached — a far more honest signal than a GPA. A True North transcript states, in fix notation, exactly which skills a student holds and at what depth. We expect success in a recycle-model school to be more predictive of college performance than any metric currently in use.
▸What about AP courses?
AP courses as traditionally taught are too rigid for a recycle model, but AP tests can be taken at any time without the course. Students advanced in their studies take AP review units and sit the exams — with the ultimate goal of completing most college general-education credit before graduation.
▸What about standardized tests?
True North Academy does not organize learning around standardized tests. Where state law requires them, students sit them — and a child taught to the 95% standard has nothing to fear from a bubble sheet.
▸Won't students forget material between units?
If a student forgot everything over a break, did they actually know it to begin with? True comprehension needs only a speedy review. Rest periods help internalize concepts — and our unannounced retention checks measure exactly what survived, which is the only measure that matters.
