An Online Private School
True North Academy
Where children learn to mastery — measured honestly, retested until it holds, and never socially promoted past what they truly know.
Conventional schooling counts years in a seat, certifies compliance, and calls a C — not knowing 30% of the material — a passing grade.
True North Academy is built the other way around: begin at the terminal objective, fix every skill to it, verify honestly, and recycle until the standard is met. The standard is an A.
Orton's Meridian Model
Three Instruments of Honesty
I
The Meridian Scale
Grade levels renumbered 0 to 90 on a scale terminating at 100 — the entry point of collegiate coursework. Each level states plainly what fraction of the journey has genuinely been covered. Fifth grade sits at Level 50: the literal halfway point.
II
The Knowledge States
Ten states, KS-1 Introduced through KS-10 Internalized, describe what it actually means to “know” something — with the Forgetting Test as the arbiter. “Could recognize it on a Tuesday” and “commands it for life” are different verbs.
III
The Pairing Discipline
Every assessment is matched to the knowledge state its format can genuinely verify. A multiple-choice test may certify recognition — nothing more. A grade may claim only the state its instrument can measure.
The Meridian Scale
The Number Is the Distance
The spacing is deliberately nonlinear — it tracks the decelerating curve of childhood cognition. First to second grade covers more developmental ground than all of high school.
The Method
Retest & Recycle
The Army does not care whether a soldier can throw a grenade the proper distance the first time he is taught — it cares that he can do it now, when called upon. The test verifies the training; it is not the point of it.
At True North Academy every subject is broken into units. Fail a unit test and you retest — fresh questions, same topic. Fail the retests and you recycle: relearn the unit, often taught a different way, and pass it properly. Nothing less than an A — 95% — moves a student forward.
- ◆ No social promotion — ever
- ◆ Retests are expected, not shameful — recycling is how everyone learns
- ◆ Fewer classes at a time, more classes per year, less homework
- ◆ Unannounced retention checks — because cramming is not knowing
95%
The only passing grade. An A — or the unit recycles.
0–90
The Meridian Scale: every level a true fraction of the road to college.
KS-10
Internalized — knowledge years of neglect cannot remove.
0
Students socially promoted past what they can prove.
Validated Generative Tutoring
Abundant Practice, Checked by Real Teachers
Our practice library is drafted by AI in volume — and no child ever sees a problem a qualified teacher has not personally checked and approved. The AI drafts; the teacher judges; your child practices from the approved library only.
